This fearsome critter figured prominently in early Paul Bunyan stories and, according to legend, was captured alive by Rhinelander pioneer Eugene Shepard in 1896. The Hodag was described as having "the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end." The beast was put on display at the first Oneida County fair, where thousands of spectators gathered (and paid) for a peek. As news spread, a group of scientists from the Smithsonian Institution expressed intent to inspect the creature. Unfortunately, this meant the end of a hoax for Shepard . . . or so they say.
