The Loreley steam yacht was built for Mrs. Catharina Seipp, widow of Conrad Seipp, the founder of Seipp's Brewery in Chicago in the 1850's. This yacht graced Geneva Lake from 1890 through 1920, and Black Point Estate and Gardens is one of the Wisconsin Historical Society's historic sites.
The Loreley steam yacht was built by the Warrington Iron Works for Mrs. Catharina Seipp, widow of Conrad Seipp, the founder of Seipp's Brewery in Chicago. This yacht graced Geneva Lake from 1890 through 1920 and was one of only a few with the engine in front of the boiler. The mermaid motif on the bow reflects the Loreley's namesake, a siren of beauty in German legend.
Black Point Estate & Gardens
This stunning historic estate set along the southern shore of Geneva Lake was the vacation home of Chicago beer baron Conrad Siepp. Siepp, a German immigrant, began brewing beer in Chicago in 1854 and quickly rose to become one of the country’s leading beer barons. The Seipp brewery is notable for its prolific use of advertising, making it one of the most successful breweries of its era, and it closed in 1933. Seipp’s great-grandson, William O. Petersen, donated the 20-room house, its grounds and furnishings to the state of Wisconsin in September of 2005 for use as a historic site.
