In the early 1800s, during Wisconsin's mining boom, lead miners often dug tunnels in hillsides to shelter from the harsh winters, much like badgers burrow into the earth to hibernate. These miners earned the nickname “badgers,” and the term became synonymous with the perseverance and determination of Wisconsin's early laborers.
