Jerry has been a part of the NAGC staff since he retired from his career with the University Hospitals in 2000. Doing genealogical research for over forty years, Jerry had an opportunity to work as a volunteer with Gerhard Naeseth in the early 1990's, helping create one of the first computer databases for Norwegian-American genealogy. Among the many classes he has taught, Jerry offered genealogical instruction for over 25 years at Madison Area Technical College for adult continuing education.

Topics that will be covered at the workshop:

  • Can Norwegian American Genealogical Center help me find MY Ole Olson?  Resources and methods available at Norwegian American Genealogical Center and Naeseth Library to help you find your ancestors in Norway and help track them in the United States.
  • Black sheep, horse thieves and some nice people grow on family trees. The basics of how to research organize and document a genealogical project.
  • Scandinavians to the Midwest and Points Beyond: Explanation of why our ancestors packed their bags and headed not only to America, but other points west.  What did they experience on the sailing ships coming over and how readily were they accepted when they arrived.  This also covers their assimilation into life here in America.
  • Naturalization - The final step toward Americanization?? Did your immigrant ancestor start or complete the process? What were the steps and what records were generated?
