Product Details
Madeline Island has been a place of cultural encounters for hundreds of years, as different groups of people have come into contact with one another. The mixing of lifeways and belief systems that resulted from this grand encounter of cultures lives on today in the descendants of the original Ojibwe and French traders and voyageurs who continue to live in the Madeline Island region.

The history of the island and the Chequamegon region has also been one of the encounters with the natural world, with land and sky and mostly, with mighty Lake Superior. The ways in which humans have used the region's natural resources to create a place for themselves in this challenging and beautiful place is an ongoing story that remains true today. As generations of island residents and visitors know only too well, "the lake is the boss."

Ancestral home to the Ojibwe people, the island continues to have great cultural and spiritual significance for those first people. And it beckoned new-comers as well - French explorers, British fur traders, Scandinavian immigrants, and midwesterners looking for the perfect summer getaway. To this day Madeline Island is regarded as a magical place, a place for immersion in the natural world, a place of encounters.

This short film is a lively introduction to the island's story, through song, narrative, and picture. But it is only an introduction. The real Madeline Island experience is just a ferry boat ride away.
