During and after an individual served in the Civil War, many records were created (muster-in rolls, pay rolls, descriptive lists, hospital records, etc.), each requiring a separate search to provide a complete record of service. In January 1885, Governor Jeremiah M. Rusk brought to the attention of the legislature the gradual destruction of original war records by overuse, resulting from the increased need for verification of military history for pensions, assistance, Grand Army of the Republic, etc. Funding was authorized for publication of a roster summarizing each veteran's service and for widespread public distribution. These "Red Books" and "Blue Books" (Regimental Muster & Descriptive Rolls) are available for researchers at the Wisconsin Historical Society archives and scans are now available for purchase online.

Hard copies of these records will be mailed within 2-4 weeks.
