By John O. Holzhueter

This rich history of Madeline Island and the Chequamegon region chronicles the days before the missions to present-day tourism. "Madeline Island and the Chequamegon Region" includes numerous historical photographs from Wisconsin Historical Society collections.

Steve Cotherman, director of the Wisconsin Historical Society's Madeline Island Museum introduces this journey into the beauty and history of the island region with a new foreword that updates Holzhueter's original work

John O. Holzhueter, who served as associate editor of the "Wisconsin Magazine of History", was a member of the Society's research and editorial staff starting in 1973, and is well known throughout the state for his broadcasts about Wisconsin history prepared for Wisconsin Public Radio. Besides speaking and writing on Wisconsin topics, he has acted as a bibliographic and reference consultant for academic and lay historians from around the country and was closely involved with the six-volume "History of Wisconsin" project for nearly two decades.
