Topics that will be covered in this workshop:

  • Introduction to Danish Genealogy: Finding your ancestor's town of origin in Denmark is essential in Danish genealogical research. We will explore Danish emigration and Danish emigration records, the structure of Danish countries and parishes and the Danish patronymic surname system, and using U.S. records. Combining these fundamentals will create a strong foundation for successful research.
  • Danish Vital RecordsDanish vital records are well preserved, available online, and provide a wealth of information about your ancestors, but searching them can be challenging. Learn how to locate and navigate Danish census and church records (birth, confirmation, marriage, death). Get tips on Danish vocabulary and reading Gothic script. Examine how the digitized original Danish records are organized and get tips to avoid pitfalls while searching the Danish Archives.
  • Websites and Tips for Danish GenealogyOnce you've mastered searches in the Danish National Archives, it's time to explore other online resources to add to your Danish genealogy toolbox. These gems might be just the tip needed to break through that brick wall.
  • Using History to Make Your Ancestors "Come Alive"Do your family's eyes glaze over when you talk about the birth dates of their great-great grandparents? Have you found every record possible but still not satisfied your thirst for knowledge? Having trouble piecing together why your ancestor did something? All of these problems can be helped using history! Learn to use local, national, and world history to fill in details and experiences in your ancestors' lives, delight your family with interesting historical tidbits, and make ancestors "come alive" to our loved ones. You will learn specific examples in Danish history and where to explore further on your own.
