This fearsome critter figured prominently in early Paul Bunyun stories, and (according to legend) was captured alive by Rhinelander pieoneer Eugene Shepard in 1896. The Hodag was described as having "the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end."
That year, the beast was put on display at the first Oneida County fair, where thousands of spectators gathered for a peek. As news spread, a group of scientists from the Smithsonian Instituition wanted to inspect the creature. Unfortunately, the extra academic interest soon led to the end of a hoax for Shepard . . . or so they say.
