During the Civil War, it was not uncommon for Army units to have live animals as mascots for their troops. These mascots helped lift the spirits of the soldiers. Old Abe was raised by the McCann family of Chippewa Falls and trained for battle with the Eau Claire Badgers (soon to become the Eau Claire Eagles), members of the Eighth Regiment of Wisconsin's Volunteer Infantry. As a beloved soldier, Old Abe soared over battlefields and rallied his comrades through skirmishes and engagements. So much in fact, did his fame grow, that visiting Union officers and dignitaries tipped their hats to the eagle while Confederate soldiers chose to make him a target.
