Raku pottery is an art form that originated in Japan, in the late 1500’s. The term raku translates to enjoyment or ease. It was believed that the raku artist is a potter who lives the technique, not just uses it. Each piece by Wisconsin master potter Noah Montgomery is hand-thrown, left to dry, and bisque fired. The pottery then goes through a raku fire. He uses a special kiln fueled by propane that reaches temperatures around 1800F. While the pieces are still glowing hot, they are put into a reduction barrel where the heat ignites different combustibles. The fire and smoke create amazing designs, shapes, and patterns making each piece a unique gift. Luminaire measures 3.5 high with a 3.5 inch base.
