Product Details
In the tradition of celebrating all of our stories from the iconic to the ironic, the Wisconsin Historical Museum store is releasing a set of refrigerator magnets based on 1950s International-Harvester refrigerator advertising. International Harvester marketed their product to women by offering a “femineered” line of refrigerators. Multi-colored handles and decorative door covers to match your drapes were available.

International Harvester's refrigeration business began with the manufacture of milk coolers for farmers in 1935. The company quickly expanded that business to include refrigerators and freezers for bottling companies, taverns, bakeries and other commercial customers. In 1947, taking advantage of postwar demand, IH began making refrigerators and freezers for the household market. By 1952, the company had sold over one million household refrigerators. Company executives believed, however, that they would have to make significant investments in order to remain competitive. Instead, they decided to focus on the company's other product lines and discontinued the refrigeration business in 1955.

The advertising images come from the McCormick International Harvester collection, the largest single collection held by the Wisconsin Historical Society Archives. This massive collection includes hundreds of thousands of images dating from the 1840s through the 1980s, created by and for the McCormick and International Harvester companies, and Cyrus McCormick and his family.

Each magnet is 2" x 3"
