Winner of the Wisconsin Library Association 2002 Outstanding Achievement Recognition Award and UW-Madison Cooperative Children's Book Center outstanding book in CCBC Choices 2002.

This important book presents the history of the Native peoples living in Wisconsin from their own perspective. In the preface, author Patty Loew describes the book as "My earnest attempt to explore Wisconsin's rich native heritage in a collection of compact tribal histories. Therefore I confined my discussion to the twelve Indian nations-- the Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Potawatomi, Oneida, Mohican, Brothertown, and six bands of Ojibwe-- whose presence predated Wisconsin statehood and who have maintained a continuous residence here."

Elders and tribal historians in each of these Native communities participated in the development of this work, making suggestions and offering criticism as the book came together. Illustrated with maps and more than ninety photographs, and complete with an index and list of further readings, this book is indispensable to anyone interested in the region's history and its Native peoples.
